To have a birthday in the autumn season is to be truly blessed. Rare are those that get to celebrate their big day surrounded by loved ones in the wonderful, crisp weather that makes people want to come together. The fall season was made for celebration: Halloween and Thanksgiving to name a few, and let’s not pretend like December isn’t more fall than it is winter. Christmas is nearly a fall holiday. To have a birthday during these wonderful months? It is a gift.

So, what can YOU (the wonderful and thoughtful person who always takes charge of things like this) do for a special someone in your life? We’ve gathered up a list from local fall season experts totaling five wonderful things for you to do with the fam this season.

1. The local park

Your local park remains to be underutilized as one of your favorite places to hang out. Parks are greats because the Parks and Rec folk do a wonderful job keeping those places in tip-top shape. You’ve got awesome grass, the occasional pond, some wildlife, and lots and lots of room to run around and go wild.

Depending on the age group here, you could have some different options. For the younger crowd, any sort of “games” is always a blast at a park. It’s an automatic good time. Consider looking at some bounce houses to make the day memorable for both kids andadults. There must be some bounce house out there that can support adults. Wow, that would actually be awesome, can someone get back to me on that?

Besides that, grilling some food and having people bring some desserts and just hanging out is a great time. It’s gets you out of the house and outside where it’s nice. See if there’s a fire-pit somewhere and get some s'mores going.

2. Amusement Park

You know what’s arguably better than going to an amusement park in the summer? GOING IN THE FALL. When things get spooky, things get better. The atmospheric ambiance of a “haunted” amusement park is a blast for anyone and everyone that likes to enjoy the fun things in life. Not to mention roller coasters are 130% better when you’ve got a dark night and chilly wind flowing through your hair. Let the birthday guest pick all their favorite rides and give them a day to remember.

The rides are great, the mood is great, and the food is great. Having funnel cake when it’s cold outside in an amusement park is one of those essential core memories in my life. Go eat some great snacks then take someone through a haunted house or corn maze. Don’t feel too proud to go through a haunted house—it’s fun to let go of your pride and allow yourself to get scared by the 16-year-olds that are trying their hardest to freak you out. Embrace it, my friend.

3. Local fall fair

Speaking of amusement parks, your local fair is definitely worth going to a birthday party. If you don’t have a local amusement park or they closed earlier due to cold weather, you’ll find the great energy and passion from an entertainment junction at your local fair.

This place is the best for a birthday. It caters to all the needs for a birthday party: entertainment, food, and a place to do presents. Plus, there’s lots of flexibility in what exactly the entertainment is. If your birthday guest doesn’t enjoy rides, there’s other options like games, petting zoos, shows, or much more easy-going rides. The food has a wide variety as well. Is your child a straight up carnivore? Look no further than that massive pork leg that they’ll gnaw on like a dog to a bone. Need sweets? You already KNOW that fairs specialize in the mouth-watering, delicious, delectable, squishy goodness that are fried desserts. Funnel cakes, fried Oreos, and, if you’re super lucky, fried Twinkies!

4. Sports/art day

Call me a biased sports guy, but I always see fall as the best time to play sports. The weather tricks you into thinking that playing outside is best in 80-degree weather. No, no, my friend, it is the fall season that reigns supreme with outdoor recreation. You really want to play outside when it’s 60, maybe even 50 degrees. You’ll call me mad now, but trust. I have spent a fair amount of my life sweating. I know good football weather when I see it.

Let your birthday guest pick the sport of their dreams and set up a little field in your backyard, the park, or even a high school football stadium if they allow that. You could even mix two sports together, like football and ultimate frisbee, or golf and… baseball?

For those that aren’t into sports, there are dozens of great fall theme birthdays you can have at home or outside. If you’ve got a painter, have them follow a tutorial on how to create a spooky Halloween painting and then let them go nuts. You can make desserts and decorate them, you can watch a scary movie, go apple picking, hiking, etc. The sky is the limit!

5. LEAVES

This one requires a bit of timing and a bit of luck, but have you ever seen some kids play in a pile of leaves? My goodness, it’s like the heavens rained down the most glorious gift ever, and they will be content for hours. I admit this does vary depending on where you live and the number of trees in your yard and the timing. My oldest brother lived in northern Idaho, and he didn’t get much but pine needles falling every autumn. It wouldn’t make the worst pile of something to jump into… But still, if all these things come together, you’ve got yourself one of the easiest birthday parties to put together.

Regardless of where you live, whether it’s nice and warm in the south or cooling quickly up north, the fall season has something for every birthday boy and birthday girl.
