Hiking is a highly-rewarding activity. For the small cost of a bit of effort and a smidgen of time, you get some good exercise, some time with good people, and some of the most incredible sights the world has to offer. Of course, there are few places on Earth that can compare with Utah in the quality of trails. Below are a few of our favorite hikes that can be completed in a day or less.

Y-Mountain

One of the most iconic sites in Utah Valley, Y-Mountain is a must-climb. Hiking to the Y itself is easy enough for kids of all ages, with the option of hiking to the top of the mountain for older groups wanting more of a challenge. The view of Utah Valley is superb, and the best part might be being able to relive it every time you see the Y.

Angel’s Landing

Considered by many to be the highlight of Zion’s Park, this difficult trail rewards you with views worth flying around the planet for--right in our backyard. The best time to hike Angel’s Landing is in late March to early April. The weather has usually warmed up, the crowds haven’t gathered yet, and the fauna is beginning to grow. Perfect. If you can’t make it then, the hike is incredible year-round.

Donut Falls

Another hike suitable for young children, this hike is full of greenery and conveniently located by Park City. The falls themselves are breathtaking and unique--my personal favorites of any waterfalls outside of Yellowstone. It’s pretty popular in the morning, so I would recommend going in the evening. You will certainly not miss out on any of the beauty by seeing the falls at dusk!

Corona and Bowtie Arch

A hike of moderate difficulty, and absolutely worth the effort. There is a reason much of the art (even the license plates!) depicting Utah somehow includes the arches. Nature proved herself a master architect with these arches, and a mile and a half from the parking lot is the only thing separating us from these marvels.

Lake Blanche

Despite being a somewhat strenuous hike, Lake Blanche can be reached in just a few hours. The great part about this hike is that you don’t have to wait until you get to the end of the path for the sights! Every step of the way opens new views, all of which are top-tier. While Donut Falls may have my favorite waterfall, I must give the “Best Hike Award” to Lake Blanche.

Mount Timpanogos

Hiking the back of Mt. Timpanogos is one of my most fond memories. The wooded trail below and then the meadows and finally rocky cliff sides, this hike has the most variety out of any on our list. Bring lunch and eat before you go--this one will take most of the day, but still can be done by kids with some hiking experience, I’d say around ages 12 and up. Once you get to the top, it won’t matter if you are 12 or 112, you’ll have your breath taken away by all 360 degrees of the view.
